The Interdepartmental Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine (CIDSTEM) of the University of Modena e Reggio Emilia has a 2000 sq meters GMP facility containing 17 independent Class B rooms, which is run by the University spin-off Holostem Terapie Avanzate. The GMP facility is devoted to the preparation of epithelial grafts, destined to clinical application in cell therapy and gene therapy and to the development of phase I/II clinical trials based on different types of ATMP, also on external commission.
To date, the first available product is the cultured corneal epithelium for cell therapy of massive destruction of the ocular surface associated to limbal stem-cells deficiency due to chemical and thermal burns. The CIDSTEM researcher team is currently running two clinical trials on ex-vivo gene therapy of the junctional form of Epidermolysis Bullosa (JEB). Additional epithelial stem cell-based products for cell and gene therapy of other squamous epithelia are still at the stage of pre-clinical development and will be available in the next future.
