INESCOP is a service organisation for the footwear and related industries. It was formed by companies in these industries in order to collectively deal with technological activities of sectoral interest, which cannot be carried out by individual organisations.

Currently known as the Technological Institute for Footwear and Related Industries, INESCOP began its activities in 1971 and works as a non-profit making organisation. It counts more than 600 associated companies in the whole of the country.

Recognised as the sectoral centre of innovation and technology, INESCOP provides direct services, transfers knowledge and technologies and carries out research in areas of general interest. In order to be able to provide the necessary support to the Industry, the organisation relies on excellent human resources and fully equipped premises located in the main shoe and components for footwear producing geographic zones.

All of the work at INESCOP is closely related to the footwear industry and allied trades because projects and services of a wide nature are developed in which the companies are involved; that is the case of the transfer of knowledge and technologies; or the development of specific projects.

The activities span the wide range of scientific and technical needs of the companies, such as testing and assurance of quality, the organisation of the production processes, the study of materials, the development and incorporation of advanced technologies, the specific training of human resources, specialised information and documentation, relations with the environment, industrial design, fashion trends and applied research in general.

INESCOP carries out APPLIED RESEARCH: within the framework of national and European programmes about technology, materials, quality and environment. INESCOP’s research work is focused on applied projects close to the industry interests and basic research is developed by our own team, or in collaboration with the University, the Spanish Senior Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), the Spanish Energy, Environment and Technology Research Centre (CIEMAT). In European projects other European Institutes for footwear and national and international companies collaborate with INESCOP.

The organisation’s experience and suitability to develop its own projects is backed up by the large number of projects approved in competitive calls at a regional, national and European level in the field of research, technological development, innovation, technology transfer, preparation of training material, etc. In fact, INESCOP has been participating in European projects since 1986.

Furthermore, INESCOP is a member of several associations and groups linked to the activities carried out or the services provided. Among others, at a national level INESCOP belongs to the National Accreditation Body (ENAC), the Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification (AENOR), the Spanish Federation of Innovation and Technology Centres (FEDIT) and the OTRI Network (Office for the Transfer of Research Results). At an international level, INESCOP is a member of the European Association of Research Institutes for the Shoe Industry (EURIS) and the International Union of Shoe Industry Technicians, whose treasury is currently held by INESCOP.
